SLMPD Releases 2017 Crime Statistics

St. Louis, Mo. – Today, Police Commissioner John W. Hayden Jr., released 2017 Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) statistics citing a 1.9% increase, or 463 more crimes, in the City of St. Louis.

Person crime increased 7.3% and property crimes increased 0.1%.

In 2017, the department reported 25,404 Part I Crimes which represents a 1.9% increase compared to 2016 when 24,941 Part I Crimes were reported.

Part I Crimes are comprised of homicides, rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults, burglaries, larcenies/thefts, vehicle thefts and
arsons.

“We can do better and we will do better in 2018,” said Commissioner Hayden. “Our pursuit of excellence begins with implementing a comprehensive crime strategy, working closer with the community, and taking a holistic approach to reducing crime in the City of St. Louis.”

The department records crime according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) guidelines.

Total Part II Crimes decreased 7.7 % when compared to 2016.

2017 Part I Crime Statistics

2017 At a Glance
• Total Part I Crimes increased 1.9 % when compared to 2016, from 24,941 crimes to
25,404 crimes
• Violent Crime (Crimes Against Persons) increased 7.3% when compared to 2016,
from 6,018 crimes to 6,459 crimes
• Property Crimes increased 0.1% when compared to 2016, from 18,923 crimes to
18,945 crimes

2017 Reported Crimes Against Persons
• Homicides increased from 188 in 2016 to 205 in 2017, or 9.0%
• Rapes, which include both Forced Rapes and Attempted Rapes, increased 0.3% from
288 to 289
• Robberies increased 2.1% from 1,904 to 1,944
• Aggravated Assaults increased 10.5% from 3,638 to 4,021

2017 Reported Property Crimes
• Burglaries decreased 2.0% from 3,201 to 3,138
– This represents the lowest number since 1947 when there were 2,246 burglaries
reported
• Larcenies increased 4.0% from 12,394 to 12,894
• Vehicle Thefts decreased 11.3% from 3,058 to 2,713
-This represents the lowest number since 1951 when 2,239 vehicle thefts
reported
• Arsons decreased 25.9% from 270 to 200
