Rams close to signing free agent defensive tackle Fred Robbins

Devaney denies team has any interest in re-signing Richie Incognito

The Rams are poised to make their second free-agent signing in two days as talks were close to being finalized Saturday night with New York Giants free-agent defensive tackle Fred Robbins on a multi-year deal.

Robbins has played 10 seasons in the NFL, the last six with the Giants and was there when Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo was the defensive coordinator. He is listed as 6-foot-4, 317 pounds and can play both tackle positions.

Last season, after undergoing microfracture surgery in February, Robbins played 16 games with the Giants and started 12. He turns 35 on March 25, ironically the same day that quarterback Sam Bradford will have his own private workout at the University of Oklahoma.

Feeley officially signs

Quarterback A.J. Feeley officially signed his two-year contract worth about $6 million Saturday.

Asked about Feeley’s role, Rams general manager Billy Devaney said, “It’s kind of fluid right now. It could be any number of things, any number of options. In addition to being familiar with the system, knowing the West Coast offense inside out, knowing Steve and Pat (offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur), he also has the ability to slide into any role.

“He understands any potential role he might be called on to fill and he has the temperament to fill any of those roles.”

As for where Marc Bulger stands, Devaney mentioned that Bulger was at the team facility the other day, and he said, “I don’t care what anybody says (about Bulger). This is a helluva kid. He’s a pro’s pro and understands everything.

“We told him as soon as there’s clarity and we have a feel for how this will play out, he’ll be the first person to know. It could be anything, and he understands that. Our position right now is that he’s still a member of the Rams and if that ever changes we’ll be up front with Marc.”

Simply noting

*With tight end Derek Fine released after being on the roster for about two weeks, Devaney said, “He’s a great kid, but there was some stuff ... let’s just say it was a football decision and leave it at that. It was strictly based on football. We have a couple other guys that we’re talking to, so it ‘s best at this point before the offseason workouts start up (March 15) to make that move.”

*Contrary to a published report, former guard Richie Incognito wasn’t told by the Rams when he visited the team facility Thursday that they might be interested in re-signing him. Scheduled to be a restricted free agent, the Bills did not tender him on Thursday, making him a total free agent.

Asked about the report, Devaney said, “That’s totally bizarre. Look, I love Richie. Everybody here does. Spags does. There is the 90 to 95 percent of Richie that is outstanding. It’s the other 5 or 10 when the dark Richie kicks in and it becomes a problem.

“He was here to pick up some clothes or equipment. He was here about a month ago. We told him the door is always open any time he wants to stop by and say hello. But trust me, that’s all it is; just dropping by to say hello. Richie feels the same way. He knows with everything that’s gone on here, it’s best for him to be someplace else.

“So, no. It’s never even been brought up about re-signing Richie.”

*Devaney was also asked about the team’s reported interest in Arizona free-agent safety Matt Ware.

He said, “It has never come up. Never. Never ever, not even close. It’s amazing. I guess it’s that time of year when there’s a lot of stuff floating around, flying around. But, no, it hasn’t been discussed and it won’t be.”

*Confirming further a report on ProFootballTalk.com that safety Brodney Pool could possibly be at Rams Park Monday, a Rams source said Pool is scheduled to visit. Drafted by the Browns in the second round of the 2005 draft, the 6-2, 205-pound Pool was not given a tender by the Browns as a restricted free agent.

Previous reports Cleveland indicated that Pool might be considering retirement after suffering the fourth concussion of his career in November and missing the final five games of the season. He played in 11 games in 2009, starting 10.
