Missouri Department of Transportation Director Pete Rahn addressed the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Wednesday in Washington, D.C., receiving a compliment by Committee Chairman Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) for his work to help move the recent funding extension forward.
Rahn was the first to speak in a panel about the importance of transportation investments to the national economy and jobs.
He represented the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, noting how the Recovery Act money for transportation has contributed to the economy through job creation and retention, and pointing out the need for a long-term highway and transit funding authorization bill.
Sen. Boxer thanked Rahn for bringing attention to the dire need for why a transportation bill is critical, referencing a Feb. 19 notice to contractors that February bids for Missouri projects would need to be postponed without a federal funding plan in place.
“You brought it home to the American people and to us that there are consequences for our action or inaction,” said Boxer.
