Zero degree temperatures and now snow

According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning will be in effect from noon Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday.

With a high of only 18 degrees Wednesday, St. Louis could also accumulate up to 2 inches of snow during the day. The weather forecast gives a 70 percent chance of snow during the day and could accumulate up to 4 inches late in the night.

By Thursday night the total snow accumulation could be between 5 to 7 inches.

"Drivers are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling Wednesday afternoon and evening, when the heaviest snowfall is expected to occur,” Zim Schwartze, Director of the Columbia and Boone County Office of Emergency Management, said. “Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits and below zero, leaving those exposed to the cold prone to hypothermia and frostbite.”

St. Andrew’s Senior Solutions is reminding area residents of the dangers that the bitterly cold temperatures can pose for the older adult population and encouraging them to take steps to ensure that their elderly loved ones remain safe, warm and out of harm’s way during the current cold snap.

“Because they tend to lose body heat faster than the general population, older adults are far more vulnerable to hypothermia than younger individuals,” said Heather O’Brien, Eldercare Specialist with St. Andrew’s Senior Solutions. “Seniors don’t have to be outdoors for problems to arise, particularly if they feel compelled to lower the thermostat to help prevent escalating heating costs,”

Thursday evening will bring an end to the snow, but the overnight lows are expected to be as low as 3 degrees below zero.
