Stats show fewer murders in St. Louis in 2009

The number of murders in the city of St. Louis dropped in 2009 compared to the year before, according to police crime statistics. But murders in 2010 got off to a quick start on New Year’s Day with the shooting of two young men in North St. Louis.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reported there were 143 homicides recorded in the city for 2009. That's 24 fewer than the 167 homicides reported in the city during 2008. Police departments record crimes such as homicides that become part of the FBI's Uniform Crime statistics

Almost as soon at the books closed on 2009, homicides began in the city with the shootings in the 4400 block of Theodore around 1 a.m. Police identified the victims as 19-year-old Chuncy Prinn, and 20-year-old Versail Kennell, who were shot inside a house. Prinn, of the 4400 block of Enright, was shot in the head and back, and Knoll, of the 2000 block of Knoll, was shot in the chest.

Witnesses told police they heard shots fired inside the house on Theodore. Police say someone knocked on the front door, was let inside and opened fire. Another suspect came in through a back door. Four different weapons may have been fired inside the house, police said.
