January 7, 1966: Gene Kiniski beats Lou Thesz in St Louis, to become NWA champ

History was made on January 7, 1966 when 11,612 people watched Gene Kiniski beat Lou Thesz at the Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis.

Kiniski battled Thesz through three-falls to strap the NWA World Title around his waist at the end in victory.

After 1 minute and 17 seconds of the third fall, Kiniski pinned Thesz and was declared the winner. Kiniski became the first man to have held the AWA World Title and the NWA World Title.
