January 28, 1953: St Louis Cardinals Owner Fred Saigh convicted of tax evasion

St Louis Cardinals owner, Fred Saigh, pleads guilty and was convicted of income tax evasion.

He was entenced to 15 months in prison & fined $15,000.

National League President, Warren Giles, ordered Saigh to sell the baseball team, paving the way for Anheuser-Busch to purchase the storied franchise

Fred Saigh died December 29, 1999.

His estate benefited many charitable organizations. Fred also had a brother, ¬†William Saigh who was a professor at St Louis University and started a local restaurant chain, the “Lettuce Leaf.”
